Clean truck check regulations
What is Clean Truck Check?
Clean Truck Check is a California Air Resources Board (CARB) program that requires most heavy-duty trucks and buses driving in California to prove they are not polluting excessively. If your vehicle operates on California public roadsโwhether itโs registered in-state or out-of-stateโand has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 14,000 pounds, you may be required to complete regular emissions checks and submit results electronically.
Officially called the Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance (HD I/M) program, Clean Truck Check focuses on diesel and alternative-fuel heavy-duty trucks, buses, and certain motorhomesโthe vehicles responsible for a large share of on-road emissions. The goal is simple: keep high-polluting vehicles off the road, reduce smog-forming pollution, and ensure that emissions control systems are working the way theyโre supposed to. Starting on January 1st, 2027, fleets will be required to test four times a year.
