Why Form 2290 E-Filing Can’t Wait
The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is easy to forget until the DMV asks for proof. By then, the truck may already be waiting on it.
A 2290 deadline that sneaks up
The IRS says Form 2290 is due by the last day of the month after the month a truck is first used. For trucks on the road in July, that means August 31.
No Schedule 1, no registration
The IRS tells truckers to use the stamped Schedule 1 as proof of payment when registering with the state. So if your truck runs at 55,000 lbs or more, registration stalls without it.
25 or more trucks? Paper is out
Because the IRS requires electronic filing for any return reporting 25 or more vehicles, larger fleets need an e-file provider anyway.
Three shops, three waits
Most owner-operators pay a smog shop, a tax preparer and a registration office separately. Meanwhile, the truck sits while each one waits on the others.

- Low-mileage trucks: trucks expected to travel 5,000 miles or less (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) are suspended from the tax, but you still have to file.
- Fleets: returns reporting 25 or more vehicles must be e-filed.
