Sound familiar?
What Happens When an MCS-150 Is Missed
Filing your MCS-150 is required every two years, even if nothing has changed. Because the due date hides in your USDOT number, it’s easy to miss.
A deactivated USDOT number
FMCSA says a missed MCS-150 biennial update will deactivate your USDOT number and may bring civil penalties of up to $1,000 per day, up to $10,000.
A due date hidden in your number
FMCSA sets your MCS-150 month by the last digit of your USDOT number, and the second-to-last digit decides odd or even years. Many carriers never realize it until it’s late.
“Nothing changed” still counts
FMCSA requires the biennial update every two years, even when none of your company information has changed.
A new FMCSA login system
FMCSA is moving registration to Motus, which uses Login.gov and identity verification. Consequently, many carriers get stuck before they can even start the filing.

MCS-150, USDOT & UCR Filings
Why These Filings Matter
FMCSA requires every USDOT number holder to update its MCS-150 every 24 months, even if nothing changed. Missing the update can get your USDOT number deactivated, which can take your trucks off the road, and can lead to civil penalties.
Key facts
- When your MCS-150 is due: the last digit of your USDOT number is your month (1 = January … 9 = September, 0 = October).
- Which year: if the second-to-last digit is odd, update in odd-numbered years. If it’s even, update in even-numbered years.
- UCR: interstate motor carriers, brokers, freight forwarders and leasing companies register every year, with fees based on fleet size.
- Changes: update your USDOT record any time your address, fleet size or operation changes.

What Our Customers Say
“I was dealing with multiple registration holds at the DMV that was preventing me from registering my truck and got stopped at the port due to the MCS-150 and Form 2290 filing… American Trucking Compliance came to the port in LA, took the time to explain everything… and came to us the same day! We were able to register my truck!”
“Very polite, down to earth people with great service in California, Las Vegas and some other places. Highly recommend.”
“Service was great, they were very helpful and very informative! Definitely recommend.”
MCS-150, USDOT & UCR Filings FAQ
When is my MCS-150 due?
Every 24 months. The last digit of your USDOT number sets the month (1 = January through 9 = September, 0 = October), and the second-to-last digit sets the year: odd digit means odd-numbered years, even digit means even-numbered years.
What happens if I miss my MCS-150 update?
FMCSA can deactivate your USDOT number and may assess civil penalties. A deactivated number can stop you from operating.
Who needs UCR?
Interstate motor carriers, brokers, freight forwarders and leasing companies. It’s renewed every year, and fees are based on the number of vehicles you operate.
Can you file for carriers outside California and Nevada?
Yes. These are federal filings, so we can handle them for carriers anywhere.
