A Title Transfer Gets Stuck Faster Than You Think

Most title transfers stall for one of these reasons:

Bought from a private seller

You have 10 days to transfer ownership with DMV. After that, late penalties start adding up.

The title is lost or missing

You’ll need DMV’s Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227) before anything else can happen.

You inherited a vehicle

Heirs can often transfer without probate using a REG 5 affidavit and the death certificate, but the rules and value limits have to line up.

Paperwork doesn’t match

A missing signature, a lien that wasn’t released or a smog certificate that expired can get your transfer rejected at the Rancho Cucamonga or Pomona DMV.

Title Transfer in Ontario FAQ

How long do I have to transfer a title in California?

DMV says buyers have 10 days after purchase to transfer ownership, and sellers have 5 days to report the sale with a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability.

How much does a title transfer cost?

$75 for the title transfer, or $50 when you book it with a VIN verification. DMV transfer fees and use tax are separate and paid to DMV. A $20 trip fee may apply.

What if the title is lost?

DMV requires an Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227). We complete it with you and process the transfer.

Does a title transfer need a smog check?

Usually. The seller provides a smog certificate on most gasoline vehicles. Vehicles from the most recent 4 model years pay a smog transfer fee instead, and diesel over 14,000 lbs, electric vehicles and motorcycles are exempt.

Is there a DMV office in Ontario?

No. Ontario residents usually go to the Rancho Cucamonga DMV field office (8629 Hellman Ave) or the Pomona office (1600 S Garey Ave). With us, you skip both: we come to you anywhere in Ontario.
